Topics: Adding details to the webpages, attaching files, adding images, and adding tutorials with screencast--o-matic.
Prerequisite Knowledge: Teachers attending today's workshop, should have completed days 1 through 3 of the Creating a Classroom Website Workshop. *Students in EDTC640, please use your Yola account to work through the procedures. Thank you.
Content: In today's workshop, teachers will begin adding advance components to their webpages. These items can be used to enhance instruction, reinforce classroom activities while at home, and to communicate with parents. Teachers will be using Yola, however, these activities are performed in a similar fashion on the other three sites mentioned on Day 2 of the workshop. Teachers will add images, files, and screencasts to their webpage during this session.
Objectives:
1. Teachers will create webpages that are rich in content, so that learning may be reinforced outside of the classroom.
2. Teachers will create and embed a screencast into their webpage.
3. Teachers will add images to their webpage.
4. Teachers will attach .pdf files into their webpage, and also attach additional documents to the page.
Instructional Method: The workshop will be taught with a mix of presentation, using active links, video, and independent work. See agenda below.
Materials: All materials will be provided. Teachers are encouraged to bring a storage device with digital images and documents. Digital images are preloaded onto computer lab computers if teachers did not bring digital images or documents of their own to use.
Evaluation: Daily feedback will be in the form of a training exit slip.
Thursday Agenda
8:00-9:00 Good morning. Take a look at the completion of the initial phase of this workshop as a review. Can you notice any key elements that may be missing?
Today we will add more to make our website more inviting and comprehensive. Just to note, here are some key factors to consider when making your webpage:
Use this time to ask any questions or resolve any technical issues before day's agenda begins. This time may also be used to fine tune any issues with the initial webpages. Images and files may be downloaded at this time to prepare for the day's activities.
9:00-11:00 As easily noted by the class, the website I showed is missing many of the key components. However, it is ready to be updated and developed. Its structure has been established, so now I will add details.
1. Adding an image: Insert your media so you may have access to the image files you intend to use on the website. If you did not bring any, please use the preloaded images located in the Pictures folders in the My Documents file on the desktop.
3. Click on the image to the right of your main screen banner. This image is a stock image, or a free one provided by Yola to use in your site. We are going to change this image.
Now you will be given a box that ask you to upload or browse for a new banner. Click upload. It will allow you to select an image from your folder. You may need to open your device from this screen in order to find your folder with the images.
4. After you select your image, you will see a screen that allows you to position your image for your banner and size it accordingly. Move the photo around until it appears in the box the way you want to see it on the website. Always remember to click "Save" each time you complete a step.
Remember: Click "Save"
5. You may also insert images in other areas.
Although attractive, images can distract viewers from the content of the page.Always make sure you are using relevant images. Also, if you are not using a personal image, note free use policies and copyright procedures. Always cite images that are not yours.
Practice inserting images throughout your webpages. Do not forget to press "Save".
12:00-1:00 More Content: Now we need to add more content to the website. To begin, lets insert text.
1. Click the area you would like to add text to so that the widget box opens at the right of the screen. Click and drag the Text button to the area you would like to add text.
2. Add text to the box. This is where my schedule may be found.
3. Attachments allow students and families to access files they may need at home or use to seek further information. At times, it is easier to download a PDF file instead of a Word document. To create a PDF file, see below:
To add an attachment, click an area so the widget box may be seen, click and drag the "File" button to the area you would like to place the document.
1:00-2:00 Presentation: Next, we will create a lecture and embed that into our webpage in case a student was absent and needs instruction. Screencastomatic is a free website that will allow you to create audio presentations that display images from your computer while you speak. This program is very easy to use and can be embedded easily onto a webpage.
1. Open the presentation you wish to use and minimize it on your desktop. You can use anything, any program you would like to include on the webpage. I am using a PowerPoint presentation, however, you can even walk students through a website, document, or other valuable information you wish to include.
2. Open the Screencastomatic website. It may prompt you to download the new software, if you have not already done so, please do it now, then proceed with the following steps. Click the "Start Recording" button and a dashed line boxwill appear on your computer screen.
Once you press the "Start Recording" button, the dashed box will appear.
3. Maximize the program you wish to discuss and adjust the dashed line fram so that your presentatin is completely visible in the box. Press the red dot to record the presentation. Press it again when you are finished recording.
Remember to Press "Save".
4. When you are finished recording, you will need to press "Publish Screenocast" and "Upload to Screenomatic". Once this is done, go to "My Screencasts" from the Screenomatic website. Select the presentation you desire to embed and open that window.

7. Next, click and drag the "Google Gadget" button and drag to where you would like to have your presentation displayed. Paste the code into the box.
